12.11 - Saudi Arabia: writer arrested for poems posted on his blog
Poet and blogger Rushdie Al-Ghadeer was arrested by the Committee for
the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV) in the
eastern city of Dammam on 4 November in connection with some of the
poems posted on his blog (rushdie.mkatoobblog.com).
Interrogated for eight hours and forced to undertake not to continue
writing such poems, he filed a complaint against the CPVPV the next
day.
Ghadeer referred in a poem entitled "Poetic sorcery" to a book of
magic which the CPVPV regards as "heathen." He said: "I quoted a
passage from a book in the course of informing my readers about it.
Talking about a heathen does not make you a heathen."
Aged 36, Ghadeer is this year's winner of the city of Warsaw's world
contemporary literature prize for his "creative writing steeped in
human compassion."
