Scientists stress the dangerous link between air pollution and climate
change
Brussels, 03 November 2009
Scientists from the European Network of Excellence on Atmospheric
Composition Change (ACCENT) have stressed the dangerous link between
air pollution and climate change and the multiplied negative impact
they have on the environment and health when combined. With the
presentation of their research at a scientific conference today and
tomorrow in Brussels, leading scientists from all over the world are
contributing to European policy development to help with the fight
against this phenomenon.
The symposium brings together over 200 experts in the field with
government representatives of European Union Member States. The
meeting highlights the fact that now more than ever the scientific
community must work closely with policy makers. The participants are
going to identify the research needs and emerging issues concerning
pollution and climate change.
ACCENT is one of the major research projects funded by the European
Commission in the field of climate change. Its overall goals are to
promote a common European strategy for research on atmospheric
composition sustainability. To achieve these it has developed a
sustainable collaboration within the European scientific community and
its interactions with policy-makers and general public. The European
Commission contributed over 11 million EUR of funding to the project.
Two important ACCENT reports will be presented at the symposium:
* The 'ACCENT Synthesis publication', which gives a comprehensive
review of the present knowledge in the field of atmospheric
composition change with a problem-oriented approach. It describes
the effects of the changes on climate, regional air quality and
ecosystems. It addresses the issue of training for young
scientists and new learning tools on atmospheric composition
change for school pupils. The interaction between science and
society in the field of atmospheric sciences deserves special
attention.
* 'Answers to the Gothenburg Questions' - addressing the Gothenburg
Protocol of 1999 about the reduction of chemical air pollution up
to 2010 - will provide politicians with guidance for implementing
measures.
Both reports and information about the strategic development of
integrated air pollution and climate change research will be made
available shortly on the ACCENT website
