Friday Round-Up: Vettel in controlIn the run-up to the Singapore Grand Prix much concern was voiced about the harshness of the bumps on the uneven city streets but for first practice on Friday the cause of concern were bumps of an entirely artificial nature. It looked pretty tight out there today, so we need to wait and see. Sebastian Vettel Red Bull Racing The preceding Porsche practice session had dislodged kerbing at Turns Three and 14, necessitating a half-hour delay in the start of FP1. With the gap between FP1 and FP2 being shorter here than elsewhere (to accommodate night running) eventually the decision was taken to shorten the first session to 60 minutes. It got underway half an hour late, the problem fixed through the simple expedient of removing the loose kerbing. Later in the session another kerbing issue, this time at Turn Seven, had the running briefly halted again. In between the stoppages there was time for Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) to set a fastest lap of 1:48.599, some four-tenths quicker than the best effort of Sebastian Vettel?s (Red Bull Racing). The constant interruptions ? there was another red flag in between when Heikki Kovalainen?s Lotus stopped on track with flames bursting from his front brakes ? ensured no one settled into a rhythm, and the top six, completed by Webber (Red Bull Racing), Alonso (Ferrari), Button (McLaren) and Massa (Ferrari), were covered by three-and-a-half seconds. Kovalainen?s stoppage aside, the only incident of note was a coming together between Timo Glock (Virgin) and Webber which cost the latter a nose cone and left the Virgin with a rear puncture after a misunderstanding saw the pair collide at the penultimate corner. FP2 got underway on time with many teams opting to split the session, running soft tyres for the first half and them switching to supersofts in the later stages. Red Bull Racing comfortably held first and second position in the early running, with Vettel on top. There was a brief flurry of positional changes as teams went to the faster rubber but Vettel returned to P1 with 1:46.374, before settling into a long run. Alonso was second ahead of Hamilton, Massa, Webber and Michael Schumacher (Mercedes). "We worked on the set up of the car, but the baseline was not too bad," said Vettel. "We still have to make a good step overnight. It looked pretty tight out there today, so we need to wait and see." Jenson Button had a short FP2, having abandoned his McLaren after overshooting Turn 14, while Sébastien Buemi went one worse and clattered the barriers to leave his Toro Rosso damaged and parked at the beginning of the pit-straight. Elsewhere, Paul di Resta (Force India) endured a frustrating evening, a hydraulic problem restricting him to just eight FP2 laps on a track he hardly knows at all. The general consensus after the session was that many teams need to do a lot of work tomorrow evening in FP3.
