Bekendmaking halfjaarcijfers

Commenting, Mike Grabiner, Chief Executive of Energis, said;

"Energis has had another very good half year.

"Strong demand for our advanced, broadband data and complex hosting solutions, combined with our extended addressable market in Continental Europe have all contributed to this performance.

"Total sales for the first half 2000/2001 increased by 81% to £368 million, and, within this, sales of internet and related services doubled to £139.5 million as we leverage our position in advanced internet hosting solutions and IP internet connectivity services to Internet Services Providers. Advanced services and Internet and related now account for over 66% of our turnover.

"Costs have continued to fall as a percentage of sales, despite the early development phase of our Continental European businesses. Consequently, Group EBITDA grew strongly to £65.5 million an increase of 71% compared to the same period in 1999/2000, with UK EBITDA up 89% to £75.3 million.

"The growing strength of our UK business is shown by the continued rapid growth in sales, up 54% to £306 million and the move into strong operating profit - £20.3 million, compared to a £2.7 million loss for the first half last year.

"In a business communications market that continues to show strong growth, Energis is increasingly well positioned, especially in the higher growth, higher margin data and internet segments.

"Our focus remains solidly upon the large corporates where there is increasing recognition of the extent to which telecoms, and particularly data and internet services, are central to their competitive position. This is complemented by our reseller sales channel addressing the small to medium sized business market.

"Energis is now no longer just a UK business. We have widened and deepened our footprint in a set of linked national European markets, and this provides further powerful growth platforms.

"In the UK, our critical mass, our network reach, our service portfolio and our reputation for quality and service and traffic volumes, position us extremely well to benefit from the changes in the market as the local loop unbundles; as broadband fixed line, IP and mobile services converge; and as internet hosting shifts firmly to complex solutions.

"Our network extension programme connecting to BT's digital local exchanges is significantly strengthening our economics and expanding our addressable market. This coupled with our IP overlay network is also positioning us very well for the growth of unmetered internet traffic, in which we are already the leader.

"In Continental Europe, the fact of later market deregulation combined with plentiful availability of dark fibre gives us the opportunity to build substantial businesses through marketing our existing suite of data and internet services. These are typically in advance of those offered by the incumbents or by other new entrants.

"Our recent equity placing, combined with our EBITDA growth, gives Energis the financial strength to continue exploiting the opportunities we see.

"Looking ahead, we remain confident about Energis prospects, both in the UK and in Continental Europe."
