The struggle should proceed with the young generation
Tom Beanal, President Dewan Adat Papua
speaking to Papuan community in the Netherlands 24 November 2005
based on notes by Evelien van den Broek
[ Nederlands ]

All regional leaders of the Dewan Adat Papua have come along in this delegation to The Netherlands. This group is supervised by me, vice-chairman of PDP, and by Thaha AlHamid, secretary-general of PDP.
The struggle needs to be continued. In the adat we can find ourselves.
Many people have been tortured, killed, disappeared or have sought refuge.
These adat-leaders don’t ask for payment, they are hard-working and determined. It is because of their engagement that we as a people will not vanish but can proceed.
We have come to The Netherlands mainly to listen to the findings of professor Drooglever. The book has been published and the question is what we are going to do with it.
We have to address the younger generation. The older generation has done a lot of work and should pass on the baton to the young generation. This is the moment. In this modern époque we should pass on some responsibility to the young generation. We should stop accusing each other and place the truth in the foreground. You should not ask where you are bound for. That question will be answered in West Papua and not in The Netherlands.
In a few days, we will return to West Papua. I want a real movement to emerge here, so that we as a people will not disappear. The struggle should proceed w ith the young generation. The youth should wonder about what they can contribute. The next time I’ll be in The Netherlands, I don’t want to see only elder Papuans but many youth."
