PALO ALTO, Calif. - Oct. 20, 1999 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced it has acquired NetBeans Ceska republika a.s., a Czech Republic joint stock company (NetBeans), by means of an asset purchase. NetBeans is a leading developer of cross-platform Java-based integrated development environments (IDE). NetBeans IDE products combined with products from Sun's acquisition of Forte Software, Inc., also announced today, will provide the million-plus Java Development Kit(tm) (JDK(tm)) software customers with software choices that range from entry-level offerings for individual developers and students to enterprise-class offerings for team development. Sun will also provide customers with the expert consulting and support services they need to dot-com their businesses.

NetBeans development tools are a complementary extension to the Java platform providing developers from entry level to professionals with a powerful, customizable environment for developing web applications for the Internet and intranet. NetBeans Developer visually extends the Java Development Kit (JDK) and includes integrated visual design, editing, compilation, and debugging tools. NetBeans software is based on an open API, which provides an extensible platform for development of third party, customizable, modular tools for the Java platform. The current tools suite supports the Java 2 platform including JavaServer Pages(tm), Servlet, XML, CORBA, RMI and JDBC(tm) technologies platform.

SUN MICROSYSTEMS COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF FORTE SOFTWARE

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 20, 1999 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW), today announced that it has completed the acquisition of Forte Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: FRTE), based in Oakland, Calif., a leader in tools for developing, deploying and integrating scalable enterprise-class distributed applications. In accordance with the terms of the acquisition, each share of Forte Common Stock was converted into 0.3 shares of Sun Common Stock. Based on Sun's closing price on October 19, 1999, the merger was valued at approximately $700 million on a fully diluted basis.

Forte technology is used by more than 500 customers worldwide, including more than 100 independent software vendors. Forte Software's three product lines include: SynerJ, the integrated Java(tm) development environment for creating enterprise-class Java-based applications, Forte Fusion, the XML-based Enterprise Application Integration environment for integrating business applications and Forte Application Environment 4GL tools for building, integrating, automating and deploying powerful business solutions.
